The site is located in the northwestern corner of Spain, on a tiny rural village in the Camariñas estuary, overlooking the atlantic.
The ocean house was built for a couple who wanted a place to escape from the routine of urban life. The house is conceived as a retreat by the sea, a place of seclusion whereto regain an appreciation for the simpler pleasures of living.
The project departs from an idea of creating an ergonomic and easily accessible open space platform of roughly 150m2, where sleeping, reading, cooking, dining and contemplating could happen indistinctly, with spectacular views of the bay as the backdrop. The geometry of the plan is sheared, giving hierarchy to the NE-SW diagonal and emphasizing the south-western corner of the house in order to negotiate the relationship between the longitudinal axis of the plot and direction of the views of the ocean.
The platform was doubled-up in height to generate volume so that the house remains cool. This gave the opportunity to stack a mezzanine where guests could stay. On cold rainy days the fireplace, the centerpiece of the plan, becomes the focus of attention, effectively assisting the underfloor heating system, which provides uniform all-round heat. In the summer one can enjoy the bucolic spectacle of the sun setting in the ocean horizon every evening.
